How to use the AVIF to JPG tool

  1. STEP 1

    Add AVIF files

Drop up to 50 .avif files on the box or choose them from your device.

  2. STEP 2

    Pick the JPG quality

90 keeps the picture sharp. Lower it if you also want a smaller file.

  3. STEP 3

    Download your JPGs

Save them one at a time or all together as a ZIP.

Why you ended up with an AVIF file

AVIF is a modern image format built on video compression. It makes photos far smaller than JPG at similar quality, which is why more websites and image hosts serve it. When you save an image from such a site, you may get an .avif file even though it looked like a normal picture.

The catch is compatibility. Current browsers display AVIF, but many desktop programs, older versions of Photoshop, print shops, e-commerce uploaders and application forms still reject it. Converting to JPG fixes all of that.

What changes when AVIF becomes JPG

JPG cannot store transparency, so any transparent area is filled with white. If you need to keep transparency, use the AVIF to PNG converter instead. JPG files are also usually larger than the AVIF they came from, because AVIF compresses more efficiently. That is normal and does not mean quality was added.

AVIF can hold wide-gamut and HDR colour. The converter outputs standard sRGB JPG, so very saturated images can look slightly different. For everyday photos and graphics the result is visually identical.

Questions people ask

Is the conversion lossless?

JPG is always lossy, but at quality 90 or higher the difference from the AVIF is very hard to see. Use 95 if you want to be extra careful, at the cost of a bigger file.

Why can't my computer open AVIF files?

Windows needs an AV1 video extension to preview AVIF in its own apps, and older image editors do not support it at all. Converting to JPG avoids the problem.

What happens to transparent areas?

They become white, because JPG has no transparency. Use AVIF to PNG to keep the transparent background.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Your browser decodes and converts the files locally, and nothing is sent to a server.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, in current versions of Safari, Chrome and Firefox. If your browser is too old to read AVIF, the file will show an error and nothing is lost.
