How to use the Compress JPEG tool

  1. STEP 1

    Add your JPEGs

Drop up to 50 photos on the box. JPG, JPEG and JFIF files all work.

  2. STEP 2

    Set quality or size

Quality 75 is a good start. Or switch to target size and enter a limit such as 500 KB.

  3. STEP 3

    Download the result

Each photo shows its before and after size. Save them one by one or as a ZIP.

Picking a JPEG quality

JPEG quality is not a percentage of anything, but the ranges are predictable. 90 and above is close to the original and saves little. 75 to 85 is the sweet spot for web and email: files are often a third to a half of the original and look the same at normal viewing size. Around 60 suits thumbnails. Below 50, blocky edges and smeared detail start to show.

Photos with lots of fine texture, like foliage or fabric, lose quality sooner than smooth skies or portraits, so check the preview on a busy photo before running a whole batch.

How to reduce JPEG file size without this tool

File size follows pixel count, so resizing is the biggest lever. Halving the width and height cuts the pixels to a quarter. On Windows, the Photos app and Paint can resize and save at a lower quality. On a Mac, open the photo in Preview, choose File, then Export, and drag the Quality slider. On an iPhone, sharing a photo from the Photos app and choosing a smaller size in the options sends a reduced copy.

Re-saving also strips metadata such as camera model and GPS location, which saves a few kilobytes and removes location details before you share. Shrinkrs does this automatically, and applies the photo's rotation to the pixels so it still displays upright.

Questions people ask

Will compressing reduce the photo quality?

JPEG compression is always lossy, but at 75 to 85 the loss is rarely visible at normal size. Each compression pass loses a little more, so always compress from the original file, not from an already compressed copy.

How do I compress a JPEG to a specific size, like 200 KB?

Choose the target file size option and enter the limit. Shrinkrs searches for the highest quality that fits. If the limit is very small for the photo, it also reduces the dimensions until it fits.

Does it remove EXIF data and GPS location?

Yes. Re-encoding drops EXIF metadata including camera details and GPS coordinates. The orientation is applied to the pixels, so the photo is not rotated wrongly.

Can I compress many photos at once?

Yes, up to 50 at a time with one shared setting, then download everything as a ZIP.

Is anything uploaded to a server?

No. The photos are processed by your browser and never leave your device.
