How to use the Reduce Image Size in KB tool

  1. STEP 1

    Add your image

Drop in a photo, scan or signature. JPG, PNG and WebP are supported.

  2. STEP 2

    Enter the size limit

Tap a preset like 50 KB or 200 KB, or type your own number.

  3. STEP 3

    Download

The result shows the final size and dimensions. If it is under your limit, you are done.

How the size limit is reached

Shrinkrs first tries your image at its full dimensions and searches for the highest quality that stays under the limit. That keeps the picture as sharp as possible. If even the lowest acceptable quality is still too large, it shrinks the dimensions in small steps until the file fits, then tells you the new size in pixels.

This means a very small target on a very large photo, say 20 KB for a 12-megapixel image, will come out smaller in pixel dimensions as well as lower in quality. That is unavoidable: there are simply not enough bytes to describe that many pixels.

Tips for upload forms and applications

Many online applications, portals and marketplaces cap uploads at somewhere between 20 KB for a signature and 200 KB or 1 MB for a photo. Check the limit and the accepted file type before you start, because some forms accept only JPG.

Shrinkrs counts 1 KB as 1,024 bytes. A few sites count 1,000 bytes, so if a form rejects a file that is just under its limit, aim for about 5 percent lower. Cropping the picture to the area you need before compressing also lets you keep more quality at the same size.

Questions people ask

How do I reduce an image to under 100 KB?

Add the image, make sure Target file size is selected, tap the 100 KB preset and download the result. Shrinkrs picks the highest quality that fits.

Can I compress an image to 20 KB or 50 KB?

Yes, though large photos will also be reduced in pixel dimensions to reach such small sizes. Small images like signatures and passport-style photos get there with little visible change.

What if the result is still over my limit?

The tool tries up to ten size reductions. If a file still does not fit, it tells you the smallest size it reached. Crop the image first, or lower the max width, then run it again.

How do I convert MB to KB?

Multiply by 1,024. So 1 MB is 1,024 KB and 2 MB is 2,048 KB. The 1 MB preset here uses that value.

Is my image uploaded?

No. Everything is done in your browser. This matters for IDs, certificates and signatures that you may not want on someone else's server.
