When PNG is the right target

Choose PNG over JPG when the image has transparency, such as a logo or cut-out, or when you plan to edit it further. PNG is lossless, so the converted file contains exactly the pixels the browser decoded from the AVIF, with no extra compression damage on top.

Editing programs, design tools and slide software all accept PNG, even when they cannot open AVIF.

Expect a bigger file

AVIF is one of the most efficient image formats, and PNG is far less efficient for photographs. A photo that was a few hundred kilobytes as AVIF can easily become several megabytes as PNG. If file size matters more than transparency, convert to JPG instead, or run the PNG through the Compress PNG tool afterwards.

Does AVIF to PNG keep transparency?

Yes. Transparent areas in the AVIF stay transparent in the PNG.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the AVIF?

PNG stores pixels without lossy compression, while AVIF uses a very efficient lossy method. The size difference of several times is normal for photographs.

Can I make the PNG smaller afterwards?

Yes. Use the Compress PNG tool, which reduces the colour palette and repacks the file.

Is anything uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion happens locally in your browser.
