JFIF to PNG, and why the file grows
A JFIF file is a JPEG image. Converting it to PNG stores the decoded pixels without further loss, which is useful if you are about to edit the picture several times or place it in a design where a lossless copy is preferable. It does not bring back detail that JPEG compression already removed.
PNG is far less efficient than JPEG for photographs, so expect the PNG to be several times larger. If you just need a .jpg that works in forms and apps, the JFIF to JPG tool gives you that without any size increase or quality loss.
Transparency
JPEG images have no transparency, so the PNG will be fully opaque. The PNG format supports transparency, which you can add later in an editor if you need to remove a background.

Does converting JFIF to PNG improve quality?
No. It preserves what is in the JFIF without adding detail. PNG just avoids losing any more when you re-save the file.
Why not use JFIF to JPG?
For most uses JFIF to JPG is better because it is lossless and keeps the file small. Pick PNG only if you specifically need that format.
